Fyodor Dostoevsky’s Siberian exile became a fruitful period for his writing, he emerged after four years in prison with the stories for his most tragic work (The Brothers Karamazov) and his most comical work (Demons). Demons pinpoints a period in Russian history when the older generations wanted to preserve Slavic culture, Orthodox Christianity and tradition, which clashed heavily with the younger ‘Liberals’ or ‘Westerners’ who wanted advancement through following contemporary cultures in Europe, particularly by modeling the French. Rife with satire and absurdity - a weeping professor, a despotic philanthropist and a few young egoists end up unraveling a town. Dostoevsky examines how a small series of events involving ego and selfishness can damage all too easily.
