:: design we love :: JONSI
Jónsi, of the band Sigur Ros, has an exhibit at the National Nordic Museum and it’s unlike anything we’ve ever experienced. As a musician, artist and perfumer, Jónsi put all his talents together for this one-of-a-kind installation on exhibit until the end of July. A large, empty room has been painted in all black to highlight a sliver of light running along the center length of the all-black ceiling. A series of LED screens creates a perfect line, displaying ominous and calming waves in black and white and every shade of gray in-between. The waves roll back and forth along the length of the room as his musical overture plays on speakers above to the choreography of waves and a seaweed scent wafts through the air from smoke machines along the black box perimeter. Laying down or sitting up, you can stare into the vast emptiness with a feeling of being trapped underwater, like you are the sea creature looking up at the destruction above, protected and overwhelmed by a disturbing beauty and imagining that the end of the world is coming. You have to experience it to believe it!
